Oct 18, 2024 - Royal Yacht Britannia, Scottish National Galleries of Modern Art : Modern One and Two

It was a nice day, a little windy, but a good enough weather to venture out.  So we took a Tram ride to visit Royal Yacht Britannia in Leith, Edinburgh.  Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia is the former royal yacht of the British monarchy. She was in their service from 1954-97. She was the 83rd such vessel since King Charles II acceded to the throne in 1660, and is the second royal yacht to bear the name, the first being the racing cutter built for the Prince of Wales in 1893. During her 43-year career, the yacht travelled more than a million nautical miles around the world to more than 600 ports in 135 countries. Now retired from royal service, Britannia is permanently berthed at Ocean Terminal, Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland, where it is a visitor attraction with over 300,000 visits each year.

The highlights of this yacht are:

  • The stunning State Apartments, where royalty, world leaders and celebrities met.
  • The State Drawing Room with the Welmar grand piano
  • The State Dining Room with the gifts and mementoes collected from far flung places
  • The Sun Lounge, where the Royal Family would take breakfast and afternoon tea.
  • the Verandah Deck next to Britannia’s famous bell, the only place on board where The Royal Yacht’s name can be found
  • The Bridge
  • The Admiral’s Quarters
  • Officers’ cabins
  • The Wardroom
  • Galleys
  • the Laundry

After the touring, we had tea and scones in the Royal Deck Tea Room just like the Queen had them in her Sun Lounge.  The scones there were the best scones we had in Edinburgh.

After we got back to town, we ventured out to Scottish National Galleries of Modern Art : Modern One and Two.  It is located to west of Dean Village.  After we got to the Modem One, we could recognize the beautiful front lawn.  However, the exhibition was so so. Then we went to Modem Two.  The only exhibition there was about women rights which did not meet our interest.  So we just had a nice walk back to the hotel.
